During the space race between America and the USSR, outer space was a complete mystery to both countries, and each had to figure out just exactly what “Outer Space” was. In order to find out more about the effects of low-orbit space travel on humans, the USSR launched mongrel dogs found in the streets of Moscow into space, and monitored their vital signs. The first of these dogs was a husky-terrier mix named Laika. The USSR sent Laika into space knowing she would not return. Within 7 hours of lift off, Laika died from overheating
